Preparing for Flu Season

Of course one of the best ways to prepare your child for the flu season is to get a flu shot, but it is also equally as important to teach them how to wash their hands.

Get soap in their favorite color, even if that means you have several bottles of soap at the sink, kids love having their own special soap. If you want to make an activity out of it, you can get a small clear soap and let them mix in their favorite color of food coloring. For children who like glitter, you can mix in a spoonful of ultrafine glitter. They can decorate the soap bottle with paint pens or stickers after you have removed the labels. You may want to tell them that they only need one squirt of soap each time they are washing, kids LOVE soap!! Next, teach them about washing your hands on the top, bottom and between their fingers while making LOTS of bubbles. There are a lot of great wash hands songs out there that will help the little ones remember to wash long enough before rinsing off the soap.

The song we sing at Reading Friends is to the tune of Happy Birthday:
Wash the germs off your hands,
Wash the germs off your hands,
Make lots of bubbles,
Wash the germs off your hands.

Wash the bubbles down the drain,
Wash the bubbles down the drain,
Bye-bye to the bubbles,
Wash the bubbles down the drain.

Museum school’s song is to the tune of Row, Row, Row the Boat:
Wash, wash, wash your hands,
Wash them nice and clean,
Wash the top, wash the bottom,
And fingers in between.
